Ear Wax Removal

Cerumen also known as ear wax is a secreted substance from the glands of the ear canal to aid protection from dust, dirt and also has antimicrobial effects. However too much of cerumen can interfere with our hearing and also give us a blocked feeling, discomfort, heightened tinnitus and in some cases, imbalance.

Removing this cerumen via the Micro-suction method is much more comfortable than pressured ear irrigation and much safer, as the risk of infection is minimal. A low pressure suction device and a microscope is used for this method, hence the term Micro-suction. The Audiologist can view where the cerumen is at all times and can carefully remove this using micro-suction, making it a very effective and safe method. Micro-suction is also recommended for people who have perforations, mastoid cavities and regular infections, as syringing these types of ears can lead to further problems.

Types of ear wax removal methods used:

  • Micro-suction (Primary method)

  • Syringing (If soft wax is attached the the ear drum)

  • Forceps (Used for dead skin and foreign bodies)

  • Jobsons Horne & St Barts Hook (Used for hard impacted wax, pictured below)

Prices: £80 for both ears/ £50 for one ear

Hearing Protection

As soon as we're born, our ears are working to process the sounds around us, loud and quiet, and as we age the 'wear and tear' factor intervenes in our ability to detect and discriminate the sounds around us, especially clarity in speech. In today's society our hobbies can further affect the quality of our hearing thus protection of this valuable sense is needed.

Good quality impressions are needed to enable the best functionality of hearing protection especially made for your ears only e.g. no water leakage into the ear canal whilst swimming as opposed to using shop bought mould-able putty.

A range of hearing protection is offered at S.I Ear Care from protection from water through custom made swim plugs, to work, motorcycle or music plugs with added filters to reduce overall background noise but allow speech to filter through thus protecting the health and quality of your ears and prolonging your hearing.

Please click on the Hearing Protection Tab to see the full range of hearing protection available.
